Mutations Tier List

Mutations are the biggest EFF multipliers you can apply to ants in Build An Ant Empire. Rarity decides baseline food strength; mutations multiply that baseline. Potions are sold from the center-map items shop as one-time-use consumables with steep price jumps. This page ranks mutations by multiplier, explains when each tier is worth buying, and links back to the ant rarity tier list so you never waste a Starlight-level potion on a Common.

EFF mutation ranking

RankMutationEFFPotion costRole
SStarlight5x$5.1QiUltimate late-game multiplier
APetal3x$500TPremium endgame before Starlight
BRainbow2.25x$100BStrong high-mid spike
BCandy2x$50BEfficient stepping stone
CBubblegum1.75x$5MFirst serious paid mutate
DLeaf1.35x$1MBudget first mutate

Higher on this table is strictly better EFF. Cost scaling is extreme - do not rush Starlight while your colony still needs Egg luck, slots, and food value from the upgrade boards.

S tier - Starlight (5x)

Starlight Mutation Potion at $5.1Qi is the ceiling listed in current shop data. Reserve it for your best OP/Divine (or strongest available) ant after Index progress and colony boards are healthy. A 5x EFF swing on a weak rarity wastes an irreplaceable cash sink.

A tier - Petal (3x)

Petal at $500T is the practical endgame mutate for many colonies before quintillion-scale Cash. Apply to permanent slot anchors only. If you expect Starlight soon, you may skip stacking mid potions on the same ant - or plan Removal if you need a clean path.

B tier - Rainbow (2.25x) and Candy (2x)

Rainbow ($100B) and Candy ($50B) are the high-mid power duo. Candy often arrives first as a clean 2x; Rainbow adds another step to 2.25x. Use these when your top ants are stable and you are no longer starving for Egg rolls or expansion.

C tier - Bubblegum (1.75x)

Bubblegum Mutation Potion ($5M) is the first mutation that feels like a real upgrade for midgame A/B rarity ants. It is expensive for early players still buying luck upgrades, but cheap compared to billion-plus potions. Prefer Bubblegum on ants you will keep for a long session.

D tier - Leaf (1.35x)

Leaf ($1M) is the on-ramp mutate. It teaches the mutation flow without quintillion pricing. Still avoid Commons: 1.35x on trash production underperforms saving toward Bubblegum on a better ant.

Mutation Removal Potion

Mutation Removal Potion ($100k) clears a mutation. Use it when:

  • You accidentally mutated the wrong ant
  • You want to free a slot’s mutate path before a higher potion
  • A test mutate blocked a planned upgrade path

At $100k it is far cheaper than most mutate potions, so fixing mistakes early is correct. Do not chain removals casually during Cash code timers - spend the boost on production and rolls instead (codes).

Speed jellies are not mutations

The shop also sells temporary speed jellies (Normal, Strong, Super, Prismatic). They raise movement/production speed for minutes; they do not permanently change EFF the way Leaf - Starlight potions do. Rank jellies as session tools in the items shop guide, not on this EFF tier list.

What to mutate first

  1. Identify your strongest placed ant using the rarity tier list.
  2. Confirm colony basics: Egg luck, Egg rolls, food value, enough slots.
  3. Buy the cheapest mutation that meaningfully upgrades that ant (often Leaf or Bubblegum).
  4. Climb Candy → Rainbow → Petal → Starlight only as Cash surplus appears.
  5. Claim Index milestones when new mutations are discovered - rewards are one-time claims.

Common mistakes

  • Mutating Commons or temporary fillers
  • Buying Petal/Starlight before expansion and luck boards
  • Ignoring Removal when a bad mutate lands on a carry ant
  • Confusing timed Speed Jelly buffs with permanent EFF mutations
  • Feeding high-rarity ants to the mount NPC (ant is gone either way; mount only slightly faster than walk)

Session plan example

Early: no mutations - push upgrades and replace Commons.
Mid: Leaf or Bubblegum on your best mid-high rarity.
Late: Candy/Rainbow on Legendary-tier keeps.
End: Petal then Starlight on Divine/OP anchors while redeeming Cash codes to shorten grinds.

Mutations reward patience. In Build An Ant Empire, the players who win late game are the ones who put 3x - 5x EFF on ants that already belonged in S-tier slots - not the ones who sprayed Leaf on every Common that hatched.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What is the best mutation in Build An Ant Empire?

Starlight at 5x EFF is the strongest listed mutation, followed by Petal at 3x. Both are late-game purchases for your best ants only.

Is Leaf Mutation Potion worth buying?

Leaf gives 1.35x EFF for $1M. It is a reasonable first mutate on a keeper ant, but skip it on Commons you plan to replace.

How do I remove a mutation?

Buy the Mutation Removal Potion for $100k from the items shop and use it on the ant that has the mutation you want cleared.

Are Speed Jellies mutations?

No. Speed Jellies are temporary speed buffs. Mutations like Bubblegum or Rainbow permanently change EFF until removed.

Should I mutate before upgrading Egg luck?

Usually no. Early Cash should prioritize Egg luck, Egg rolls, food value, and slots so better ants exist before expensive potions.
